Song to (re)discover: Cherry Red - Sangue Rosso Ciliegia

Incastonata nel plumbeo intrico di Split (brano di 20 minuti, tutto il lato A dell’album…) Cherry Red riporta la “forma canzone” nella più acuta fase underground dei Groundhogs, anno 1971. Ennesima variazione su standard hendrixiani, il brano del Reverendo McPhee rimbomba come un incubo all’alba di una notte trascorsa tra polluzioni sanguinolente e sudori freddi sul tremolo della Fender; una deformazione più splatter di certi Bloodrock, dove Peter Cruikshank, il bassista dal nome più impronunciabile del Regno, percuote il suo strumento con una clava, sostenendo un riff cavernicolo, saturo, stonato ma irresistibile,  mentre il collega Ken Pustelnik si crede Mitch Mitchell epilettico e McPhee estrapola il falsetto maligno di un goblin affamato per il chorus del pezzo. Una versione grunge dei Cream più rozzi. Alla terza ripartenza, chitarra-basso-batteria è impossibile non ritrovarsi a scuotere testa e piedi in preda ad allucinazioni sonnambule.
