Assieme a Spooky Two ecco forse il disco definitivo della Via Bianca al Blues, e siamo solo ad inizio ’68! Un approccio alla Cream, talmente diretto da essere addirittura sfacciato. La produzione trasandata e grezza di Hamilton, la debordante e felina chitarra di Kossof che singhiozza tonnellate di dolore, la barba incolta di Rodgers, catapultano l’album verso l’era finale del rock britannico: paradossale che sia il prodotto di un gruppo di teenagers.

Ma questi ragazzi si divertono a giocare nella tenebra, camminando nell’ombra e questo album d’esordio è una continua ode sepolcrale sparsa tra le lapidi di un cimitero di campagna in cui il vento sibila messaggi di morte. Fin dall’arcana copertina, dalle prime 3 canzoni, che sono una perenne variazione di un unico riff culminante nell’ipnosi totale, dall’enfasi dello slow di Going Down Slow; fino alla notte fonda della litania di Moonshine. Considerando che del lotto avrebbe potuto far parte anche Visions of Hell, Tons of Sobs si candida ad essere il primo vero “Black Album” della scena rock inglese.

But these guys have fun playing in the darkness, walking in the shadows and this debut album is a continuous burial hears, scattered among the gravestones of a country cemetery where the wind whistles deadly messages.
